Parish history
In 1914 this neighborhood was an open field
with a farmer's here and there. When this country was getting ready for
the first world war, the people went to the Chancery Office to see His
Excellency, Archibishop Quigley, to start this parish. He gave them the
first administrator, Rev. Ferdinand Scieszka, then pastor of St.
Wenceslaus parish.
The first Mass in the "wooden hall", located on Lockwood and Roscoe was
held on August 19, 1914. The blessing of the church on Roscoe St. took
place on November 8th, 1914 and was dedicated August 29, 1915 by Rev.
John Obyrtacz C.R. This old church included: church, two classrooms and
living quarters for the Sisters of Nazareth. The current church was
opened for the first Mass June 12th, 1955. The architect of the new
church is Leo Strelka.
